About Drumsara Wines

Planting began in 2000 when John and Audrey Matheson set themselves a challenge to produce great wine.

Drumsara is a family owned boutique vineyard that produces Central Otago Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Come and visit us.

Family, friends, food, wine and the enjoyment of life - that's what Drumsara means to us.

Many years ago during a holiday to Port Douglas John and Audrey Matheson became great friends with the owners of a sugar plantation called 'Drumsara.' Here they enjoyed delicious food, fine wine and friendly hospitality during this holiday. The plantation was named 'Drumsara' after their home town in County Derry, Ireland.

Some years later John and Audrey set themselves a challenge of planting a vineyard and producing top quality Pinot Noir. When deciding on a name Drumsara came to mind as it evoked thoughts of what was important to them: family, friends, food, wine and the enjoyment of life.

Today

John spends most days down on the vineyard working with Garry, our extremely talented viticulturist. To achieve great results many hours of work is spent on the vines and as a result there is always a job to be done. John is so proud of the vineyard that he is more than happy to show you around if you are in the area.

Our wines are available throughout New Zealand in great restaurants, friendly retailers, luxury lodges and along the Central Otago Rail Trail.

A Sustainable Future

Current plantings mean that Drumsara will reach a sustainable production of 5,000 cases of wine annually from 2012. As Drumsara is a legacy to future generations we strive to take great care of the vineyard and the environment. We are currently undertaking steps to gain sustainable certification which we think is important to the success of the industry.

Ventifacts

Drumsara VentifactsVentus ~ Latin for wind.

Ventifacts are rock formations found in Antarctica, on Mars and in the Drumsara vineyard.

The Drumsara Ventifacts is a knife shaped glacial rock that was sculpted by the sand and sediments picked up by the 300mph late afternoon winds which rushed down the Otago glaciers thousands of years ago. Above is an example of a ventifacts found on our vineyard.

A Journey Through Wine

As the seasons change so does our vineyard. During the last few vintages we have taken photos down on the vineyard which show the vineyard in its different states. We have complied them, provided captions and it is ready for your viewing.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
